Service of Lament and Hope

The holiday season is not always an unmitigated joy and cheer for everyone. For many of us, bereavement, grief, loss, illness and other suffering loom large this time of year.

This Advent Season, on December 13th, we’re making space to lament. Space to sit with each other and to acknowledge the gap between the way things should be and one day will be and the way they are just now.  We’ll mark God’s goodness, but we’ll be honest, too, about our pain.  We’ll read scripture together, we’ll reflect on poetry, we’ll sing, we’ll be silent, we’ll light candles in the darkness and in it all we’ll invite Emmanuel, God with us, into our grief. He’s not afraid of it.
